→ having children was something that the tanners never saw in their future. they were happy as just a pair. on michael's 32nd birthday, evelyn announced she was pregnant. michael was thrilled and from then on parenthood seemed to for them. elliot was born in feb of 1984 on the worst day of the year: leap year. to him, this was going to set up the precedence for the rest of his life.
→ evelyn didn't have an easy pregnancy, and elliot was always a fussy baby, and frankly downright a total pain in the ass until he was about 3. don't get the tanners wrong, they loved elliot so much, but he was a handful. so they decided to raise him as an only child. after age 3 he calmed down, and suddenly it was a lot easier raising him. it took some planning and time, but finally when elliot was 5 years old the tanners announced another pregnancy.
→ elliot was so excited to be a big brother. he had just started school and all of his friends had siblings, except him. now, he was gonna be a cool big brother. everything of was blissful, but then evelyn passed away while in child labor. it was a whirlwind of excitement, but grief. now 6 yr old elliot was so confused, but ever since he's been his little sisters rock.
→ michael tanner was such a proud papa. he loved being a dad. his excitement for his kids was over the moon. he was at ever single event. he was determined to be the best mom/dad hybrid. of course, he had his flaws, but where michael was flawed, elliot tanner could find a way to ease that. the family was such a close unit. they were their best friends. the way i picture them is the classic white 90's tv family, that is like slightly progressive bc his a single dad. you feel?
→ aside from the death of his mother, the tanners hadn't had any major upsets. a lot of the time it felt like they endured all the shit they were going to endure. michael tanner never remarried after the death of his wife, but elliot and nancy would encourage him to date. they were occasional dates, and their dad was such a hopeless romantic, but no one ever compared to elliot's mother.
→ high school was a breeze. elliot was well liked by all of his peers, he was a star baseball player, and received a near full-ride scholarship. he studied sport's medicine not too far from home (elliot never had intentions of moving out of MA). when he left college, elliot was playing for a minor league team, but then was quickly picked up by the majors. elliot played with the red sox for the entirety of his career.
→ elliot is always a little suspicious of things when they go well. he was riding the high of his baseball career when he was brought down by an injury that would put him out of the game forever. it tore him apart because baseball was the only thing he knew. then a few months later, elliot's father became sick. his dad was given only a months to live. michael tanner lived another year and a half. during that time, his long-time girlfriend left him, and elliot ended up moving home with his sister.
→ since then, he has been trying to put back together his life. death wasn't anything they hadn't experienced before, but elliot wished that they hadn't lost their father the way they had, but in the end it's how things go right? sure, elliot is depressed, but he gets by. he smiles when he can, laughs often, and smokes a ton of pot.
→ so here's a tl;dr: elliot is a kind soul. he's sentimental. he's terribly loyal to those he loves. he's generous in the sense that he just wants nothing more than give everyone a good laugh and make them smile. he's an entertainer at heart and it's no surprise he's taken to stand up comedy to cope with the shitty hand life dealt him. he helps run his father's hardware store in town, but also teaches baseball lessons and is a handyman if you need one.
